To talk about our history, we should go back to the 1st World Federation of Neuro-Oncology (WFNO) Meeting in 2001 in Washington, D.C., USA, which was held just a couple of months after the September 11 tragedy. During the Meeting, Prof. Mitchel S. Berger, UCSF, the President of the 1st WFNO Meeting, encouraged professors Yukitaka Ushio, Kumamoto, Japan, and Masao Matsutani, Saitama, Japan, to establish a neuro-oncology society in Asia. At this business meeting, this was decided that the European society would organize the WFNO Meeting in 2005, and, then, the Asian society should organize the 3rd WFNO Meeting in 2009.
In 2002, we had the memorable 1st meeting of the Asian Society for Neuro-Oncology, in Kumamoto, Japan. The original core member countries were, Korea, China, Taiwan, Turkey, and Japan. Please find a picture of the original central members at the Kumamoto Meeting. Since then, we have had 16 meetings as shown. In 2009 the 6th meeting was held together with the 3rd WFNO Meeting, in Yokohama, Japan. In 2020 and 2021, the Meetings was cancelled because of the pandemic. In 2022, we will have the 17th Meeting in Seoul, Korea, together with the 6th WFNOS Meeting.

At the 1st WFNO meeting it was very clear that the many factions of Asian NeuroOncology needed to coalesce into one united voice for the patients of Asia. It became apparent to us in SNO that the momentum was advancing for a unified voice in NeuroOncology and along with our European counterparts (EANO) and now the growing forces of SNO that the time had come for our Asian colleagues to unite and move forward along with North America and Europe in finding advances in science and clinical trials as it related to our brain tumor patients. As we expected, ASNO evolved and represented the many productive scientists and clinicians who wanted so much to become part of a unified voice for International NeuroOncology. Together, ASNO, EANO and SNO and all other groups in the world can do more to advance our specialty that we can do alone. We are stronger together!!!
